New XBox Experience and Video Streaming Problem

Having trouble playing video since the latest XBox360 system upgrade? I was - and was convinced it was a bug with TVersity and transcoding. I was going to try bootcamping my old MacbookPro just so I could try WMP11 (my current Windows machine is Server 2003, hence the TVersity) when I decided to give Connect360 one more shot. Unfortunately, I got the same result with every video that I had tried under TVersity as well. I was told I didn't have the necessary software even though I had downloaded the media update many months ago.

On a whim I went to the support site for Connect360 where I ran across this tip:

I've installed the NXE Update and now my videos won't play!

Microsoft has released the long-awaited New Xbox Experience update for the Xbox 360. We have verified that Connect360 is fully compatible with the new update. The only known possible hiccup is video playback: In order to play back your videos using the updated firmware you will need to reinstall the Media Update available on Xbox Live.

So I just re-downloaded the media playback support and guess what? Everything works. I haven't tried TVersity again (the machine is powered down) but I'm sure it will be fine now as well.

I'm pretty surprised by this. I know the percentage of XBox360 users streaming video over their network is probably a minority, but you would imagine something like this would have been caught in QA.

As a quick side note, I'm not so enamored of the new UI. It's a bit too cutesy and I find some menu items a bit oddly placed (especially DVD playback). However - the "Install to Hard Drive" is priceless. I would have paid for that by itself. The speed boost isn't a heck of a lot, maybe 15-20%, but it adds up, and best of all - games play incredibly quiet now. I don't get the 'loud as a 747' fan during games.

I'm not telling anyone to break their seal and void the warranty but my 360 was loud beyond just a minor annoyance. Took it apart and found the heatsink covered in blanket of dust (had it laying directly on carpet for a while and guess fibers collected over time). Also found that one of the fans was actually out. Ordered a replacement fan and it's back to acceptable level.
I'm Ray, and I'm a hardware virgin. (Seriously.) I _hate_ doing hardware work. I'm always worried my hands are going to crush the delicate parts.
Ray I am a 360 newbiecan you describe your setup??
For what? Media sharing?
The day the new 360 experience update came out (a couple months ago?) my videos stopped playing as well, but I figured it was the just driver so I reinstalled and it worked. I later checked the Connect360 site (to see if there was a new version) and they didn't have a technote on the MS bug yet (guess I just got lucky by reinstalling it).

I'm still very happy I purchased the Connect360 addon for my Mac though - well worth the small pricetag.
I prefer the old UI. They've gone all Wii on us and that is totally not their market. Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking Wii - I have one of those too and I love it. They should've just stuck with the old UI and added the enhancements. We probably would've got the update much sooner.
Ray,

I have Connect360 connected to my XBox, and found the same instructions as you did, i.e. re-install the media update on the Xbox.

I could not figure out how or where to do that. Can you help?

Thanks...rb

Find a video and try to play it. You should get the error about not having the right download. If you click ok, or show details, or whatever, you will see the download listed with a checkmark next to it. The checkmark applies that it is already downloaded. If you click on the download though you have the option to download it _again_, and that will (should) clear the issue.
I don't mind the new interface, but I do take issue with its organization and lack of complete customizability. When I first installed it it took me forever to figure out where my game demos were going.

COPY TO HARD DRIVE OWNS! The only thing cooler would be if they let you copy to drive and play without having to insert the DVD. Even if there was some hard core security in place to only let this happen to one console per game, I would be all for it.

Bottom line: The 360 AND Live are incredible products. Like, amazing products. So much so that it confuses people to try and wrap their head around the fact that Microsoft is responsible for them. Props to Redmo.
