TEOTWAWKI (A good Monday post)

So I know I'm not the only who thinks TEOTWAWKI is a fun concept, but little did I know how many people are actively planning for it: Apocalpse Soon (As a warning, the link contains profanity, don't read it out loud to your three year old.) I have to be absolutely honest. There is a small part of me (very small) that thinks this kind of training isn't such a bad idea. It's not like we have to invent a way to blow ourselves up to kingdom come. Of course, people have been predicting this for a very long time. My personal opinion is that I can easily see ourselves killing a good 90-99% of the life on the planet, but that nature is strong and would find a way to recover. Just look at the amount of life that exists by the superheated vents under water.

Ray, remember that in the past, there have been quite a few times where over 99% of living things on earth went extinct, and each time it came back :) It will just take a really long time. I recommend the book "Rare Earth" if you want an interesting read in how "rare" our Earth is and how we should come to appreciate the life on it.

In Earth, a short history of everything, the author mentions 5 major extinctions and multiple smaller ones. The worst one was the Permian-Triassic which killed 95%. Not quite 99, but too close. ;)

Nathan, I never watched this but now I may try to pick it up. I'm also looking forward to the new CBS(?) show this Fall about the end of the world.

I can't claim that Jeremiah is "good" per se. It's bubble-gum TV -- kind of like the train crash you can't help but look at. A guilty pleasure, at best.

He analyses why entire cultures became extinct - not through nuking themselves for the most part. Maybe we could be the first?

I think there are many people who would be willing to initiate TEOTWAWKI if all they had to do was unplug something, much like Snake did in the movie Escape from LA. I would. Would you? I just put a TEOTWAWKI button on my web site. I wonder how many would be willing to punch the button.
